Their Vision:

To be an available lifeline to anyone in crsis
Their Mission:

provides confidential 24 hour support by trained volunteers to people in crisis, thinking or affected by suicide.
Beginnings:

Started in 1953 by Rev. Chad Varah
Humble beginnings:
started as a “999 suicidal” in the summer of 1953 Rev. Chad Varah was referred as “The Samaritan Priest” volunteers were known as ” The Samaritans” became an international, non-religious movement
In Singapore:

Started in the 1960s when Singapore was going through rapid uran change

Started preparation classes for training volunteers

Received registration by the Singapore Registry of Societies on 29 July 1969.

In 1976, Service was expanded and telephone line was changed to 221-4444

in 1992, toll-free lines were introduced, telephone line became 1800-221-4444

Their Goals:

Prevention : raise awareness and detect warning signs of suicide to the community

Intervention: face to face counselling sessions during emergency situations

Postvention : provide emotional support to suicide survivors and those bereaved by it
Through this research, I found out a lot about the objectives and aims of the organisation and a lot more about suicides.
